After our successful Monocoque development, we are now in a position to outline the Formtech Composites approach for further development, moving from the single piece Monocoque to Hybrid Body-in-White solutions:

Development of hybrid metal and composite structure to create design that incorporates best traits of both materials/systems
Aluminium/steel in areas of non-linear crash events
Composite structures to translate load
Low-volume cost effective structures with higher stiffness and strength than cast nodes

Formtech Composites brings the multi-piece Moncoque to the Hybrid Torso Concept.

After years of engineering and testing the developing partners (BBS Motorsport and Formtech Composites) are going to present their latest prototype of an hybrid high-performance wheel.

Visio.M – winner of the 2014 Electric Vehicle Competition in Germany!

We are pleased to announce that the Visio.M was winner of the 2014 Electric Vehicle Competition in Germany!

Visio.M is the state-of-art Electric Vehicle in Europe with an Hybrid-Body-in -White.

Formtech Composites developed the Monocoque concept in conjunction wtih IAV, before going on to manufacture the solution.

Design philosophy was driven by:

simplicity,
modularity,
maximising processing options &
reducing costs

One piece outer

The monocoque is built “from the outside -> in”
Pre-preg manufacturing with concept of moving towards stamped pre-preg
Reduction of adhesive joints to reduce risk on FEA modelling
The mould doubles up as the drill (no 5 axis final machining) and bonding jig

Inner skins

Potential examples of different manufacturing processing techniques
Pre-preg for initial prototypes -> move towards hybrid materials, RTM and other processing alternatives using the same moulds

Super Aguri F1 Team

Formtech Composites was created in the ex-Super Aguri F1 Team (SAF1) and ex-Arrows Grand Prix International based at Leafield Technical Centre in Oxfordshire, UK. The Intellectual Property of both Arrows Grand Prix and Super Aguri Formula One teams were part of the purchase and for the basis on which Formtech has built it’s engineering knowledge base.

This IP allows Formtech to provide a unique service to clients based around proven designs. For example, the design and testing of FIA crash tested noseboxes, monocoques and many other elements can be quickly engineered at the highest level.

Research and Development in composites using techniques developed in Formula One such as acoustic emission NDT techniques provide invaluable insight in the development of lightweight composite structures.
