Composites engineering
Formtech Composites offers the following composites engineering expertise:
Design of individual parts and wider solutions, working closely with the customer throughout the design process. Formtech use CATIA V5 CAD system to give our designers the tools they need to achieve high quality 3D models of components and tooling
Final design to manufacturability, including productionising existing components or rescoping in new materials
Material choice and bonding / joining solutions, whether changing composite material type or moving from a different material category all together.
Finite Element Analysis – calculation of the properties of the part / module / solution in order to optimise and fulfil the technical specification. We use the Altair suite of products to enable designers to optimise for lightweighting, cost reduction and/or manufacturing simplification, depending on the nature of the component and customer requirements
Design of tooling and jigs for lamination, machining, bonding and testing, covering both open and closed moulding solutions and tooling in metals, composite and pattern board. We can also manufacture mould tooling on site, utilising our CNC capabilities to create tooling patterns and carbon fibre moulds
Material and bonding testing using both destructive and non-destructive techniques through coupon testing and testing on R&D components during early stage manufacture
How we work:
Formtech Composites Engineering accompanies the customer from an early stage of the project, to the final stage of engineering to the final stage phase of engineering, with the hand-over into prototype production, where engineering is still involved for optimization of the solution.
With this expertise, we offer lightweight solutions to our customers, ranging from “built-to-print” to fully integrated “one-stop-shop” solutions – from design to manufacturing.
