R&D and Testing

Project Example: ESS Bifrost Neutron Chopper disc – first generation disc simulation

Finite element analysis was carried out on our neutron chopper disc to assess its performance when rotating at high speed (both strength and deflections) as well as modal analysis of its natural frequencies, to help interpret practical testing results from the spin chamber.  This drove design and performance improvement for the next generation of chopper disc.

Project Example: BBS Composite Wheel

Thermal strains and stiffness performance analyses were undertaken using finite element analysis to drive iterative design of a fully composite wheel.

A range of different linear static, modal and thermal analyses were carried out on this component to achieve an optimal solution.  Here, steady state thermal analysis results were generated using finite element analysis.

The temperature field was then imported from the steady state solution into a static stress analysis, where the thermal strains was assessed to check the maximum displacements due to temperature increase.

Testing of structural composite components is an important part in the process of developing composite solutions.

At Formtech Composites, we use a range of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques for components and test specimens.  These include spar tests for torsion and deflection, acoustic emission testing and, for composite sanity check, ultrasonic testing.

Non-destructive testing is an important part of the research and development phase of composites solutions, as well as manufacturing. Formtech Composites is experienced in a number of techniques used to analyse composites. Certification and sign-off of parts is of utmost importance in any manufacturing process and none more so than composites.  Using a Bondmaster 600, the quality of bonded joints in a full assembly can be assessed at the inspection stage.

Destructive testing can also be used during early-stage R&D and for test samples.  For bonded assemblies and samples, we can complete coupon testing on our Instron machine to understand the performance of these interfaces and strength of materials.
