RLE FutureMotiv and Formtech composites developed a Battery Tray System – a fire retarding battery containment in light weight sandwich structure

Iterative improvements to the design resulted in lower stresses and lower maximum deflections, giving improvements to fire resistance – the seal between lid and tray was maintained when testing the final design iteration, resulting in an acceptable level of resistance to battery cell thermal runaway and no external flame issuing from the containment.

Initial design:

Improved design – changed bolt spacing, altered stiffness of panels with changes to rib size and locations

The developed Battery Tray survived the “Teardown” - the event stayed completely in the enclosure – no external flames or burnthrough.
